Hive was appointed to undertake the mechanical, electrical, and public health (MEP) design for the refurbishment of the Chemistry Laboratories on the Ground Floor of the University of Cambridge Chemistry Building.
Hive was appointed to undertake the complete mechanical, electrical, and public health (MEP) design for the full refurbishment of the Chemistry Laboratories on the Ground Floor of the University of Cambridge Chemistry Building. The project required a highly technical approach due to the specialist nature of laboratory environments and the University’s stringent safety and performance standards.
A key element of the delivery was the use of a fully federated Revit model for MEP coordination. Hive led the digital design process, enabling the integration of ventilation, fume extract, piped services, power, and lighting within the architectural and structural framework. This ensured early clash detection, improved communication across disciplines, and provided a clear model for construction delivery.
The laboratory refurbishment included the installation of new general ventilation and dedicated fume extract systems, designed to maintain safe air quality levels in line with strict laboratory regulations. Hive also delivered the design of all piped services, including hot and cold water, laboratory gases, and drainage systems, ensuring resilience and ease of maintenance.
Electrical infrastructure was completely reconfigured as part of the refurbishment. Hive developed new power distribution systems to serve both specialist laboratory equipment and general services, alongside a modern LED lighting scheme. The lighting was carefully designed to balance energy efficiency, user comfort, and the functional demands of laboratory work.
To support the upgraded ventilation strategy, Hive also designed a new air handling plant located within a purpose-built rooftop enclosed plantroom. This solution provided the necessary capacity for the laboratory systems while minimising noise, energy use, and visual impact on the building.
The project showcases Hive’s ability to deliver complex MEP solutions for higher education and research facilities. By combining technical design excellence with advanced digital coordination, Hive created a modern, efficient, and safe laboratory environment that will support Cambridge University’s world-class teaching and research for years to come.
